Case Studies

Small Private Woodlot

“With my parents tree crop reaching maturity we contacted a recommended forest manager to best advise us on the ways to maximise our returns and give us advice around markets and timing.

Before we could do this the first question was to establish just how many trees we had and to assess their condition for sale – that is where we used Photomap in Nelson. They understood our needs exactly, and advised us to get an up to date aerial photograph from which they could prove exactly the area planted in trees. This could also give us a good idea of any trees that were accidentally planted over the legal boundary.

Within a couple of weeks (while waiting for clear skies over our place) Photomap had taken a really great photo – it was really interesting to see our place and bits and pieces from next door.

Photomap then worked a bit of computer wizardry and by the end of that week I was able to show the map and photo to my forest manager so we could then look at the fine details for selling the wood.

We are now in the process of using the map to produce an ETS shapefile to enter the carbon community!

Altogether a simple and smooth experience that was very reasonably priced indeed.”

Forest Manager A – Local Woodlots

“After hearing talk about Photomap we popped in to see them at their office in central Nelson.

They were well tuned in to what we wanted them to produce – some new photos and a map to help manage our clients forest in a more efficient and professional manner. We are particularly pleased with the way they can now incorporate a high quality photo under the map to help us all better understand how things fit together.

We were very impressed with the outputs and have used their services regularly for many years now….and the older maps have been re-projected to be used for ETS applications.”

Forest Manager B – Major Forests

“As professional managers we manage several big blocks for corporate clients, covering establishment through to final harvest together with associated reporting and presentations to their boards.

We have used Photomaps services for regular updates and quarterly reporting. They have provided an excellent and flexible service which has allowed us to up our game with good data management and forecasting. Their use of ArcView GIS has enabled us to extract varying reports over the years.

More recently Photomap have prepared our applications to the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) which have gone through the process smoothly.

Good quality harvest plans and maps have served as the backbone for our logging operations. I know our logging crew consider these maps to be the best they have had to work from.

We have demanded excellence and high accuracy standards – these have been achieved admirably.”

Vineyard Manager

“Precise areas and good management maps were what we were after, and Photomap provided them with apparent ease.

They used clear cartography to interpret their own aerial photos which included hazardous areas such as powerlines.

We are using the area and stock data which was exported by them in excel.”

Horticultural Production – Large Scale

“We have a several farms scattered around Marlborough which had seen little updating over the years.

It was decided that an upgrade to our systems was essential and that needed to start with getting all our farm maps in a new electronic format that compatible with our GIS.

Photomap was commissioned to capture new photography which was ortho-corrected (rectified) and mosaics were constructed.

With additional input from our ground staff accurate maps were finalised and exported from Photomap to our GIS.

A very smooth and worthy operation with good cartographic skills throughout.”

Contracting & Harvest Planning Manager

“Engineering Maps, Harvest Planning Maps and Resource Consent Maps from Photomap over the last 10 years have provided us with the means to move forward with a large number of our forestry projects across both the North & South Islands of New Zealand.

Both road construction and resource consents have relied heavily on a clear and accurate way of depicting our operations. Feedback from both our crew and from other forest managers suggest Photomaps mapping is the best they know of.

A flexible approach and great quality maps have seen a strong partnership develop.”

Land Developers

“A very complex series of photos were made into a long mosaic and used to plan our farm, forest and holiday lodge operations.

Overlays of differing and sometimes rather complex scenarios were layed over the mosaic by Photomap which helped us through the planning process and is now used as a basis for our land management.”

Website Imagery and Cartography

“Over the course of many months Photomap worked with us patiently to develop a large series of excellent & user friendly maps to include in our new Zealand wide tourism website.

We are indebted to their cartographic skill which would have been difficult to find elsewhere.”
